In the month of February 2018, Lucasfilm announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be writing and producing a new series of Star Wars films. No news regarding the same has been heard since then since both of them have been extremely busy in the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones. But recently, on Friday, HBO president Casey Bloys gave in an interesting piece of information which claimed that Benioff and Weiss would start working on a new Star Wars trilogy, like how The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is currently working.
Bloys told TVLine thus- “Dan and David have been busy finishing up the final season [Game of Thrones] and then they will get into working on the Star Wars universe. When they come out of Star Wars, I am assuming that they would come back to us.” The HBO president, here, is seen referring to Confederate, the planned HBO series which has been set in an alternate universe wherein the American Civil War ended in a stalemate, and he mentioned that Benioff and Weiss would come back to HBO post Star Wars.
This was announced back in July 2017 and Confederate became an instant controversy with users on the Internet, and some also called it “slavery fan fiction”. But Bloys went on to say the show’s development wasn’t affected by such things and went on to say- “The delay is because of [the fact] that they have been offered three movies. It is really up to [Benioff and Weiss]. It is extremely hard to tell someone, ‘You can’t go do Star Wars.’ They would love it. It will be a childhood dream. They will go and do that, and then they will remember why they love television and will come back.”
It looks like Bloys is indicating that Star Wars series of films which have been offered to Benioff and Weiss is a trilogy. /Film pointed out, that Bloys could be assuming that the two people would work on a trilogy since every series of Star Wars movies […] has always comprised of three movies.”
